| ||Some reason why Revolution 909 is left off ? Always thaught that was the best track other then "DA Funk" and I Think it has the essential "sound" of Daft Punk....I think youreally chopped up a great, maybee even dare i say "Essential" Album....|
| ||I don't like "Revolution 909" that much, the "cops breaking up a party" thing always felt cheezy to me. To me Homework isn't essential because I just can't sit through all 73 minutes of it, although I certainly know people who can.|
| ||I too have never been able to sit through a full Daft Punk album, but I think that's because one isn't supposed to sit down to a Daft Punk album. The tracks often run long because they are DJ tools. Thus, the first and last minutes are superfluous because they're meant to be mixed. In fact, given the minimalism you speak of, it's often possible to get the gist of a Daft Punk track in a minute. If you take the essential minute of each track on Homework, you'd have a collection of stormers. And I agree with Giantandre - Revolution 909 is transcendent. It helped introduce many people (including me) to house music's swingy hi hats. Also, the "cops breaking up a party thing" actually meant something in 1997, as rave culture arguably peaked then. Around the same time, the Prodigy's "Music for the Jilted Generation" album and the Chemical Brothers' "Block Rockin' Beats" video both speak to this anxiety regarding parties.|
| ||Gilted Generation predates 1997 by a full three years. 1994 also so Orbital release the Criminal Justice Mix of Are We Here? - four minutes of silence.|
| ||First of all thanks to Cosmo for coming to the defense of Rev. 909...... But what I wanted to comment on was the word essential... I meant it in sort of a Jack Black at the blackboard in "School of Rock" way and not in the "All Killer, No Filler" sort of way. I think "Homework" is Essential in the lineage of "Dance Music" (for lack of a better term ((I hate "electronica" feels like a brand I was being sold))) much like "Leftism" "Trans-Europe Express", Early Georgio Merrorder (sic) etc. etc. There are albums I love and listen to from beg. to end that I don't consider even close to "essential", "Vegas" by Crystal Method for one, While many I haven't listened to all the way through in forever that I do... "Pet Sounds" for example...But Ian you're right ... I may love Homework but I sure haven't listened to all 73 mins (wow you checked) in a long time.
..and have one rave you've been to get busted by the police and it isn't as cheesy as you thought
"I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids, I played it at CBGB's, everybody thought it was crazy."
"Ive never been wrong, I used to work at a record store"
Thanks for the article, Nice Job.
