 B+ was a hard thing to give this record. Not that I want to defend myself endlessly in this weird public setting, but simply: I love this record, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to everyone. It's pretty remarkable, but it's also got a whole lot of rough edges. Should something be praised simply for originality? That seems irresponsible. World of Echo is undoubtedly important, but certainly an aquired taste and (in my opinion) a very rewarding but very difficult album. If you're interested, listen to it, but if not, a B+ probably won't sway you... that's sort of the point. Thanks for sparring, though.

 I finally got this record in Germany. "The World Of Arthur Russell" was already a great album, and surely much more accessible than "World Of Echo", but all this fluid reduction, all this sparseness and minimalistic playfulness (playing with big empty spaces, dreamlike atmospheres etc.) make "World Of Echo" a living kind of thing, revealing new textures with very listening. And then, this very special contrast between the warm, melodic singing and the bizarre sounds swirling around! Aside from that, Arthur Russell´s use of the cello liberates the instrument from much of its cultural baggage. This is a thrilling and inventive work, showing again how little things can create a whole world of one´s own. Yes, it´s a rediscovered classic, class A, no doubt about it!

 I definitely agree with the other champions of this album. I think it's absolutely beautiful but also incredibly original. I wonder if Kevin Shields or Neil Halstead heard this record? It totally prefigures "Loveless" and "Pygmalion"... and he gets those all those hallmark "shoegazey" textures from a cello and a few stomp boxes. Not to mention that he played the cello standing up, singing simultaneously : NO SMALL FEAT. (it also explains a lot about his strangely beautiful cello tone). At any rate, It's definitely A material! This was one of the most overlooked reissues of 2004 (or maybe that DVD/ CD edition was way more limited than I thought it was)
