""No Donnie, These Men Are Nihilist" (an awesomely Smiths-esque title)" --- well, either that or a line spoken by John Goodman to Steve Buscemi (Donnie) in the Coen Brothers' film The Big Lebowski. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/quotes --- i never felt that kickboxing was all that awe-inspiring...the first time i saw it i thought it was a joke...kinda funny to watch a bunch of kids claiming to be "out of step" but all falling in line when the "sick" breakdown occurs - the conga line is a great comparison though...it always looked to me like a different face for the same macho boy club bullshit i saw in the locker room...

You're right about the dissonance between noncomformity ("I am so alternative") and conformity (everyone dances and dresses the same) in hardcore - but, then again, that's true for any underground music scene (hip hop, goth, metal, etc.). There's something to be said for a sense of community, though, and that's certainly more resonant for teenagers struggling with identity.
