Considering all the mystery surrounding Moodymann (who hardly plays live or gives interviews,) it’s a surprise to find this, a live concert from July of this year, streaming on the ‘ole internet. Apparently this is taken from the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, and it features most of his partners in crime (Andres, Paul Randolph, Roberta Sweed etc.)
What to expect? Much more jazz than house. The first 15 minutes is Paul Randolph singing over a backing track pretending to play a bass. Next, a blinding white screen is put up and all you see is shadows of female dancers dancing. Moodymann comes on stage to tell all of us how much he loves us, and introduces Roberta Sweed backed only by a set of bongos. Then the actual band comes out for some cool vocal jazz standards. I’m impressed, considering how much of a train wreck Moodymann is rumored to be live. Hope you enjoy it.
