This is going to be huge. I don’t know how many people yet know of this, but there’s a service offered by Apple whereby you can download individual tracks for 99 cents. Stack of Bibles, this is true. It’s called “iTunes,” and this past Saturday, upon getting some birthday cash and downloading their music jukebox, I went all crazy, Charlotte Church-like, and bought four tracks. I know! Now I’m the proud, legal owner of:
The Damned, “Neat Neat Neat”
Diplo, “Big Lost”
Geto Boys, “Six Feet Deep (screwed)”
Washington Phillips, “A Mother’s Last Word to Her Daughter”
I may end up buying Diplo’s full-length Florida some day, but upon first listen, the track that really stood out was the DJ Shadow-y orchestral workout “Big Lost”. The Phillips track is to tide me over until I find an album full of his ethereal, mournful, merciful gospel compositions. And the Geto Boys? An absolute classic. From the greatest hits comp, screwed by DJ Michael 5000 Watts, I believe. The guitar and “What’s Going On” sample gain like five new dimensions screwed, the falling “I…”s are heartbreaking every time, and the upbeat brass-deploys keep the whole affair from sinking too far down the drain.
Legal music on the Interzone! No more S.W.A.T teams kicking in my doors, no sir!
Anyway, I hear that you can assemble your songs and “cast” them out onto the web like a radio show, so I’m going to spend the next seven months looking into that. Have a super day!
